16 Foreign Citizens have been kidnapped in the West Bank and Gaza in an attempt to pressure the Israeli government to withdraw from Jericho. The Israeli army is surrounding a prison complex in which Ahmed Saadat and the other PFLP assassinators of Rehavam Zeevi, a former minister in the Israeli government are being held under international supervision. Saadat had planned the assassination.
This morning the international supervisors left Jericho by orders of their government. “The PA had repeatedly violated commitments and ultimately, the security of our personnel takes precedence” said Jack Straw, UK Foreign minister. Abu Maze had said last week that he was willing to set Sadist free. Israel was left with a choice, watch a minister’s killers go free to plan and carry out further attacks or take action. Now Palestinian terrorists are threatening to execute foreign citizens less Israel stop its Jericho action.
Foreign citizens in Gaza and the West Bank have been repeatedly warned of kidnapping threats by Israel and their own governments and have chosen to ignore these warnings. Stopping the Jericho action would set a dangerous precedent. Could any state afford to have its decisions altered by a group of militants who have the ability to kidnap foreigners at will?
It is for this reason that Israelis by law are not allowed to enter these areas. Since Israel does not exercise jurisdiction over foreign citizens and allows them to pass into areas out of its control Israel cannot be expected to halt any action necessary for state security.
Besides, I’m not sure how wise it would be for the Palestinian cause if Norwegian, American and British people saw their people beheaded because of an Israeli military action they had nothing to do with. That would be at least another 20 million in “Improving Islam’s Image” (see post below).
